Long Time No See!!!

Sweetie has been doing a small kitchen remodel. He’s taking out the L-shaped wall that separates the kitchen from the living area and replacing it with an island. I joke that the only way he can get rid of the yellow walls (which he truly hates, BTW) is to tear them down. But, half of the kitchen walls are still intact. Haha!

The studs on the left are now gone. My father has the plywood and is building the island’s shell, as I type this. Once we get the shell in – probably next week sometime – we will face it with some blue and buggy that was salvaged from James’ grandparent’s house when it burned down. We are going to use the classic white-and-gray marble floor tiles for the top. And the countertop’s trim will be cobalt-blue ceramic.

After the island is in, we’ll update the floor with vinyl tile. We already bought some for the project, but now I’m rethinking the pattern. We may end up going with something else and using the tiles that we’ve purchased elsewhere.

I still haven’t done the second coat of white paint on everything (or the first coat on the drawers). I should probably get on that…

On the crafting side of things…

I’ve been kind of obsessed with cowls, lately. They are great projects for me… They work up quickly (great for one such as myself who has startitis). They are quite useful in our area. And they don’t use a whole lot of yarn.

Cowl

This was fun to make. I like the front-post stitches. I used Cotton-Ease yarn, which is a mixture of cotton and acrylic. It’s my new favorite yarn. I made simple one out of this yarn for sweetie, but I didn’t take pictures. The pattern for this cowl can be found here. This cowl turned out a bit too long for my taste. It wasn’t long enough to wrap twice and it was too long to do much good. I ended up giving it to my niece.

Granny Stripe Cowl

This was just a simple granny stripes cowl using Red Heart Earth and Sky yarn. No pattern involved. I really like it, but unfortunately I have to pull it on over my head. Since I usually wear my hair up, this can be a bit of an issue. I made one of these in the Red Heart Pink Camo colorway, but it wasn’t tall enough. I gave it to my niece, too.

Cowl Cap

I found the pattern for this button-up cowl to wear when my hair is up and I don’t want to pull something over my head. It’s really cute, but I need to move the buttons; they are too close to the edge and as such gaps are created.

I’ve also made a couple of doilies in the last couple of days:

tOctoberfest Doily

As you can see, I made this one from yarn rather than thread. It is called Octoberfest and the pattern can be found here. I’ve never done a spiral like this before and it was fun to watch it materialize.

Five Point Century Snowflake

I stayed up late last night and made this one for sweetie. I chose it for the cute little hearts. He much prefers doilies made from thread. He’s pretty much the only person for whom I will crochet with thread. I very much prefer tatting with thread rather than crocheting with it. This pattern can be found here.

Still in the works are the kitchen curtains. A few weeks ago I had a very frustrating experience with them and have walked away. Now that there’s no wall to hide the kitchen, I get a daily reminder of how unattractive bath towels hanging over the windows are.

And here are some gratuitous critter pictures:

Picking Wool… Er, Mohair…

I had a lovely evening tonight…

I came home and finished reading a book. I enjoyed relaxing on the sofa for a little while.

Then, sweetie and I went and looked at his progress on the greenhouse. It’s coming along great – if it is a bit late in the season. He is using clear, corrugated polycarbonate panels that are rated for greenhouses. It will be very nice when he’s finished. So much better than the sheet plastic!

When I got home from work, I noticed that Ray was a lot skinnier than he had been. Then, I looked across the yard and saw a big pile of fleece laying on the ground. Darling sweetie had removed Ray’s fleece!

I picked up the fleeces and brought them to the porch to examine them and begin removing the vm (vegetable matter). I praised J on the great job that he did in cutting the fleece off Ray. He said that he didn’t cut it, it just pulled right off! He also thought it was terribly felted – but it isn’t.

I have a fairly sizable amount of fleece to go through and he still needs to get Frank’s coat off! The fleece is just lovely and I can’t wait to see how it washes up. Sweetie wants me to send it out for processing, because he thinks it’s a project that I’ll start and never finish… Yes, yes, I have second-sock syndrome, it’s true. But I am determined to process this mohair myself.

That reminds me… I need to get some hand carders!

This is going to be so much fun!!!

What’s in a Name?

So, the baby finally got his name…

We debated over Moose and Duke. We considered funny names like Godzilla – or rather – its Japanese pronunciation. We thought about Abercrombie and Chauncey.

Finally, last night, sweetie blurted out “Tank”. I liked it immediately.

The only possible problem with this name is that it rhymes closely with Frank. I suggested that his official name be Tank, but that we call him “Tanker”.

I like it.

Pieces of Eight

Yesterday, we adopted a cute little Nigerian Dwarf wether. He is five-months old and cute as can be!

Goat 1

He is so dang tiny! The Hound is nearly as tall as the tiny goat. I haven’t picked him up, so I’m not sure how much he weighs; but it can’t be much.

Goat 2

The children said that he was sneezing green snot, after we got him home. I didn’t see any snot, but I did see him sneeze. This morning, his nose seems clear and dry. We’ll keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn’t have a cold or get pneumonia. He is eating and drinking just fine, and when I checked on him after getting up this morning, he was laying under the manger (on top of the fallen hay) chewing his cud. He seems to be as active as he should be. So, I’m not too worried.

Goat 3

He doesn’t have a name… You might be able to see the tag on his collar. He is number 8. I’m kind of partial to the name Moose, myself… Any ideas?

Snow!

We have received about a foot of snow, over the last two days… This makes it difficult to do much of anything that requires going in and out of the house.

One set of steps is non-existent and the other is covered with a ramp at the moment. So, on one side of the house we are going up and down a step stool and on the other is an ice slick. Ugh.

My niece’s boyfriend has been quite a trooper, running back and forth between the house and the barn to get more boxes for us to unpack. There were a few instances where we were pretty concerned that he would fall and hurt himself.

My sweetie managed to step into the space between the ramp and the porch (did I mention that neither segues are quite connected to the house?). Thankfully, his foot hit a brick that supports the steps beneath the ramp and didn’t go all the way down.

I really didn’t do much about the house today. I spent a few hours shoveling a couple of paths to the goat pens. I don’t like getting snow into my boots and I reckon no one else does either. So, I like to make sure that our paths are clear.

In addition to trailblazing, I was on a frantic hunt for one of our bucket heaters. Of course, we never think of putting these things where we can find them when the weather is nice… No, we wait until it snows 10 inches and then try to remember where they were when they got buried. Never did find it, but my niece found one of our heated buckets, thankfully!

We really need to get the boys moved over to the pen with the girls. It’s closer to the house and gate – better proximity for feeding, visiting, etc.

I’m concerned about Frank. When Ray got pneumonia, Frank started becoming very aggressive and downright mean. Not to people, but to his brother. He just beats the heck out of Ray.

We might go ahead and put Frank in with the girls, all by himself for a day or few. We did that with Ray and Thelma put him in his place, right quick! But then again, Ray isn’t the aggressive goat, Frank is. I don’t know…

But, we definitely need to get the boys down on this end of the yard, now that foul weather is upon us. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep an aggressive goat to stop being so mean???

Ugh.
